Wait for 3G 4G Mac is Not Over

3G 4G Macbook Air
It appears that a splendor feature aimed at business travelers a decade ago, implanted 3G, and now 4G, have become ever more customary in PC laptops aimed to consumers. Apples most recent MacBook update in the rear-view mirror, nows as excellent time as any to think about what could be headed to the next generation of the companys notebook lineup.

Apple has also griped the wireless technology in its iPad, having jumped it from the iPhone to the original iPad on AT&Ts GSM network, then later, on Verizons CDMA network with the iPad 2. So whats the holdup in bringing that same technology to Macs? Is Apple waiting for something?

Of particular interest is embedded mobile broadband, a notable omission to the Mac laptop range thats now stretched into a waiting game of its own. This is the technology that lets your computer tap into cellular networks and use broadband data while on the go, sans a dopey USB adapter or wireless puck.

At the moment is that the timing has been off on the network side of the equation: 3G as we know it is on the road to being replaced by 4G, which offers a big speed improvement. Speed becomes especially important on computers versus phones because of the things people tend to do on them, like download files and e-mail attachments and run multiple applications that can slurp up data at a faster clip than smartphone apps.

Providers have placed gamble on the competing parts of the range, creating a situation where theres no easy way to buy hardware that will work with them all though technology is the one way that can do that. But the carriers and service providers have not made it so easy to get to that promised land of fast, wireless data. 4G as its been marketed in the States is not truly 4G by the strict definition. There are different flavors of that "4G," like WiMax, HSPA+, and Long Term Evolution (LTE).

4G-chip producer Beceem, which was acquired by Broadcom back in October, has a chip in development that does both WiMax and LTE. Apple uses Broadcoms wireless chips in the iPad as well as the iPhone, and for Wi-Fi on its Macs. A similar dual-mode chip initiative was put forth by Sequans at Mobile World Congress last month. Intel, which supplies chips for Apples notebooks and desktops is also said to be working on a similar solution of its own. In the interim that leaves device makers like Apple, as well as consumers, having to pick a standard and stick to it.

To the companys credit, it has provided a product that gives its own laptops wireless 3G service, though its nowhere as seamless as a built-in modem. Since iOS 3.0, users with iPhones and a carrier data plan that supports tethering, can share their phones connection with their computer over a USB connection or Bluetooth. In the Verizon version of the iPhone 4, Apple introduced a slightly more elegant feature that would let users turn the phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot, something that was later brought to GSM iPhone users in iOS 4.3.

HP Deskjet 460cb

The HP Deskjet 460 printers are reasonably compact for portable inkjet printers, but theyre still large enough and heavy enough that you wouldnt want to carry them around unless you really need to. They sit 13.4 inches wide, 6.5 inches deep, and 3.3 inches tall, and weigh 4.5 pounds without the power adapter or battery. Theyre slightly larger and heavier than the Pixma iP90v.

While the printer is small enough to be tucked into some laptop bags, the assorted peripherals the power adapter and extra ink cartridges, for example make us wish the printer came bundled with a carrying bag to house the printer and its accoutrements. The control panel is limited to a couple of buttons and indicator lights. The buttons include power, cancel, and resume, while the lights tell you whether the battery (if applicable) is charging and warns you of low ink levels.

On the rear of the printer are two USB ports one for connecting the printer to a PC and a second for PictBridge devices and USB flash drives. On the side are two memory card slots one CF and the other SD or MMC. Aside from printing from memory cards, the CF slot is used to enable wireless printing over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, using an appropriate adapter.

If youre printing over Wi-Fi, a three way switch on the rear of the printer lets you toggle between three different wireless profiles for up to three PCs or wireless networks. This is a great feature if you move the printer regularly between, for example, your office, your home, and a particular airport. For the same price as the base model Deskjet 460c, the Canon Pixma iP90v includes an IrDA (infrared) port for printing wirelessly from a phone or PDA.

The paper handling system is simple. The top cover folds up to serve as the paper input support, which has adjustable paper guides and can hold up to 50 sheets of plain paper. A small flap folds open from the front edge of the printer to reveal the output area. The flap doesnt serve as an output tray, though, so youll have to set your printer back from the tables edge or be on hand to catch the pages as they exit the printer.

A small problem we noticed is that the paper feed mechanism has some difficulty with photo paper. Specifically, when we put a batch of about 10 sheets (4x6 inch) in, it couldnt pick up the first sheet to start a print job. It tried several times and eventually gave up with an error. If we helped it along by pushing the first sheet manually, the feeder was able to grab it and print, but then itd get stuck on the second sheet.

The problem went away when we had fewer than four sheets of photo paper in the feeder. We didnt experience the same problem when using plain paper. Overall, its a minor problem, but something to be aware of if you need to do batch prints of photos.

Epson Stylus Photo 1400

The Stylus Photo 1400, since it lists for $150 less than the Stylus Photo R1800, which is the next step up in Epsons 13 inch line. However, photographers looking for more neutral black and white prints should take a look at Epsons Stylus Photo R2400, which earned high scores for its mastery of monochromatic printing. When I was in grade school, printers were massive, ugly, heavy behemoths clad in industrial looking tan plastic.

Color wasnt an option, and the dot matrix print engine sounded as if it was etching your words into a wood plaque instead of churning out a book report. Thankfully, that has changed. Sleek silver and black styling keeps the Stylus Photo 1400 from becoming an eyesore in your home office. Despite that, its still a bit large, measuring 24.2x12.4x8.8 inches when its all closed up.

Once you open it fully to print, the machine grows to 24.2x31.6x16.3 inches. Fans of PictBridge printing, which lets you print directly from your camera by connecting it to the printer via USB, will appreciate the convenience of the 1400s front panel USB jack.

But, unlike some of its competitors, this Epson doesnt include a card reader, so you cant print directly from a memory card.

Epson probably thinks that the market for this printer is too advanced for that feature, but it does come in handy from time to time.

Epson does include the ability to print onto CDs and DVDs, both full size and their smaller 8cm cousins used in camcorders. Just be sure you get the ones with the special white surface on top. As usual with the Stylus Photo line, the inks load from the top. In this case, that means six ink cartridges cyan, magenta, yellow, black, light cyan, and light magenta.

Like most home printers, paper loads from the top of the back and emerges, after printing, onto the tray that extends from the front of the unit. The input tray can hold as many as 120 sheets of plain paper or up to 20 sheets of Epson photo paper, depending on paper size and type. Epson says the printer can accept media up to 0.11mm thick in sizes ranging from 4x6 to 13x44 inches. Theres no roll feed option though, so youll have to find fulfillment with cut sheet media.

Double Shotgun Dart Blaster

The Double Shot is a one-of-a-kind weapon and has possibly the most realistic action ever seen from the Air Blaster range. Load each dart individually into its shell, and then load the two chambers, one dart in each. To cock the gun simply pull down on the barrel chamber of the gun - this will automatically compresses the high powered springs and readies the gun for firing. The Double Shot has a slightly more sophisticated trigger system than its competition, enabling the user to fire two darts at the same time from each barrel, or fire darts in succession.

The Double Shot has such a life-like action that itll even spit the empty shells out once the dart has been fired. After taking your shot, repeat the action to load the next shell into the chamber and youll see the empty shells eject, just as a real shotgun would do (if youre really good, youll catch them too!).

Pack Includes:
1 x Double Shot Dart Blaster
6 x Rapid Fire Foam Sucker Darts
4 x Rapid Fire Shotgun Shell
Cartridges

Caution:
Do not aim at eyes or face.

It will be a while before Windows Phone 7 8 update is released

  1. (When will the Windows Phone 7.8 Update be released)
Windows Phone 8 might be officially out, but the Windows Phone 7.8 update is nowhere to be found. Microsoft even ignored the matter during the press conference yesterday.

Latest online rumor has it, the Windows Phone 7.8 will be released a few weeks after the first WP8 devices hit the shelves. Then we would have to wait for the first wave of cheap WP7.8 devices that will run the release out of the box and later all old-gen Windows Phone handsets will get the update as an OTA or via Zune.

We guess all of the previous Windows Phone owners would have to wait at least a month to get the goodies brought by the 7.8 update. Lets hope the update will be worth the wait.

Could Jolla drop Beta sign with Sailfish OS 1 0 3 8 Naamankajarvi

Sailfish Naamankajärvi 1.0.3.8

Install: Settings --> About product --> pulley menu, check for updates. WLAN recommended.

System update in short

This is the third larger update for Sailfish, released 31-Jan-2014. Jolla has suprised their users with featuring a possibility to unlock the bootloader (OEM lock release), better landscape usability (now in: camera, gallery, browser), better battery life (NFC bug fix), calendar improvements and much more.

As the NFC bug will be fixed with this update, you can remove the temporary masking with this detailed guide. Masking can be safely removed either before or after installing the update.

Top10 picks from the update (full changelog - together.jolla.com)

    • OpenSource improvement: Possibility to unlock the bootloader (under new recovery menu)
    • Battery life: NFC bug fix for better battery life
    • Browser: Landscape mode in browsing, keyboard, gestures, app cover
    • Camera: Zoom with pinch gesture. Full 2Mpx resolution into use with the front facing camera
    • Calendar: Option to select calendar when creating an event + location of event
    • Store: Android apps are now identified easier with included icon
    • Phone: Option in the Phone settings to disable quick call from logs. When disabled, tapping on the call log entry will open the corresponding contact card
    • User experience: After screen time out, return to last active app (within 30 sec)
    • TOH connection: Ambience changes only if the TOH ambience is set as a favourite, or the first time The Other Half is connected to the phone.
    • Android: Improved access to phone sensors (all 5). Improved memory handling when running low on memory. SMS support in runtime envorinment (Android apps are not able to read or send any SMS, but they can now open the native Sailfish messaging app)
    • Several more updates and bug fixes, see all in the full changelog

Known issues not yet fixed on this release

    • 4G/LTE connection. Official statement: LTE supporten countries and operators will be published later.
    • Camera support for more Android apps (still not working in Facebook, Twitter)
    • Navigation feature for Jollas HERE Maps. No news about development. Several Android navigation apps are reported to work, some better, some worse.
    • Googles default calendar, contacts & events are only synched from internet to the phone - not the other way around. Adding or editing Google calendar events in the phone is useless.

Problems reported after updating the system

    • Searh link, tag "bug" & word "1.0.3.8", Jolla Together community portal

      Upcoming Sailfish update releases

      • Jolla has stated that updates are planned to be realeased monthly

      Previous updates

      • Sailfish 1.0.2.5 Maadajavri
      • Sailfish 1.0.1.10 Laadunjärvi

        Sailfish Naamankajärvi ?

Another update named by a lake. There are at least 4 lakes named "Naamankajärvi" in Finland, located at Pudasjärvi, Kuusamo, Suomussalmi and Oulu. All of them are quite small, the biggest one laying at Kuusamo, 7 565 km2.

Jolla has stated that they are using lakes of Finland in naming updates of Sailfish OS. There are 187 888 lakes in Finland, including the small ones, so we might have more than few updates coming. Looking at the size of the biggest Naamankajärvi, we could speculate that this is not as big update than the previous one - but Im still holding my breath for Sailfish Saimaa!

Oppo Find 7 Front Panel and Metal Frame Leak Out In Photos

        b952aec3jw1ec5bqkmhl7j217n18ggw4

The Find 5 went a long way towards putting Oppo on the map of quality smartphone manufacturers. They have also been teasing us with bits and pieces about the upcoming Find 7 for a while. We know that Oppo’s new flagship phone will have a 5.5-inch display with 2560 x 1440 resolution. Oppo has confirmed this for us. That means that the Find 7 will have a 538 ppi screen, which is pretty wild. More rumors are coming out of China now in the form of some leaked images on Chinese site Weibo .

The first images are of the front display panel, which is probably made by LG or JD. The panel shows us that the device will have small bezels and that it will likely have a high-resolution front facing camera, judging by the size of the hole on the front for the sensor. The display neatly frames a can of Pepsi, giving us an idea of the size of the device for comparison. Oppo seems to have a love of Pepsi.

        6cb26641jw1ec50ai7o7dj20re10yted

A second set of images also popped up on Weibo, claiming to be the metal frame of the smartphone. This would mean that Oppo is going to be bringing us a high quality, metal Android device when the Find 7 finally drops. It looks like the metal frame and the front panel would fit together nicely, although that’s not based on any actual measurements. These images are still in the rumor stage but it’s likely that they are real.

Other Find 7 specs are rumored to include a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 chipset clocked at 2.5 GHz, an Adreno 420 GPU, 3 GB of RAM, a massive 4000 mAh battery cell, and a 13-megapixel rear facing camera. If these all turn out to be true, this will be one amazing smartphone.

The Chinese handset market is just beginning to heat up and is set to explode in 2014. Oppo, Xiaomi, Huawei, and ZTE all have pretty lofty ambitions for the upcoming year. I’m of the opinion that any and all competition is a good thing for consumers. With great devices like the Find 5 , N1, and Find 7 coming our way, 2014 is going to be an exciting year.

Apple TV reportedly getting a major overhaul soon

Apple might be preparing a significant overhaul to its Apple TV streaming device. The set-top box, which has till now been regularly described as a "hobby" within the company, looks like its already being taken a lot more seriously now. The companys online store has been reorganised to give Apple TV its own top-level category alongside the iPhone, iPad, iPod and Mac product lines. It was previously consigned to the accessories section of the iPod line, but now it has its own accessories section.

A report by 9to5mac suggests that the move has come in advance of a redesign of the product itself. Apple could be readying a new version of the device that supports third-party apps and games, much like its current lineup of portable iOS devices. It is unknown whether Apple will also release a new kind of controller for the new capabilities, use some form of gesture recognition, or rely on users existing iPhones, iPods and iPads to provide input.

9to5mac also speculates that the refreshed device will integrate a Wi-Fi router to ensure that users experience smooth content delivery and video playback. There is no indication of the new devices pricing and whether there will be multiple models.

Apple had been widely expected to launch a line of television sets with a dramatically reimagined interface for media discovery and playback in 2012 or 2013, but this never came to pass. Analysts who had predicted such a launch later speculated that resistance from American content providers and cable TV operators had led to the products being scrapped. The new Apple TV could be a reimagining of those capabilities in an external box rather than built into a TV set.

        AppleTV.jpg/

Apple TV first debuted in 2006 as an accessory that allowed users to play their iTunes music, movies and TV shows on a high-definition TV set, but required to be synced with a computer. Although millions of units have been sold, the device has always been considered a niche product.

In 2010, Apple reinvented its hobby device by eliminating the hard drive, shrinking it to a quarter its original size, and emphasising its function as an online HD media streaming device. Since then, a number of third-party content services have been added, including Netflix, Hulu Plus, Disney, Discovery, Bloomberg, and a variety of sports networks. The content is largely specific to the United States, which has been another factor limiting Apple TVs popularity. Since then, a minor revision has been released, which ups the video output to 1080p.

In addition to online content, Apple TVs can be used to receive streaming video from Macs and iOS devices, and can play audio and video content as well as photo slideshows stored on a home PC or other networked device.

Over the course of its life, several people have attempted to hack or otherwise modify the AppleTVs capabilities. The devices run on a modified version of iOS, leading many to attempt to run third-party apps and software on them. The time seems right for Apple TV to take the next step towards becoming more than just a set-top box.

Google Cloud SQL and PHP App Engine Apps

App Engine for PHP allows PHP developers to quickly build robust, scalable and secure PHP applications. But the beating heart of almost every great PHP project is a robust MySQL database. Recently we announced the General Availability of Google Cloud SQL - our enterprise class, fully managed MySQL service. And as you would hope, it integrates seamlessly with Google App Engine.

Because Cloud SQL is based on MySQL, PHP users will find that using App Engine and Cloud SQL together feels very familiar. You can use many standard MySQL tools to manage your app’s Cloud SQL database, such as the MySQL command-line client, MySQL Workbench, phpMyAdmin, as well as the Cloud SDK. You can even set up phpMyAdmin as an App Engine app itself.

Cloud SQL allows developers to spin up complex PHP applications on App Engine very easily - and take advantage of App Engine’s security and scalability. For example, it is trivial to get WordPress running on App Engine.

There are lots of features that make Cloud SQL a great fit for sites with low and intermittent traffic.

        • The per-use billing plan means you only pay for the time the database is being accessed; the rest of the time you only pay for storage. You can also start with a small instance costing just $0.025/h, and at any time you can increase capacity with just a few seconds downtime.

        • The same scalability applies to storage: you dont need to reserve space in advance, and you only pay for the data you actually store — up to a whopping 500GB.

        • Reliability and robustness are crucial, so all data is replicated multiple times in multiple locations, and automatically backed up. All data is also encrypted when stored, and when on Googles networks.

While being able to run applications on the cheap is nice, Cloud SQL is also being used by large businesses like Costco to provide storage for major e-commerce sites, because of features like automated backups, data replication, and automated patches. In fact, SaaS providers like Kissflow can provide a database for each of the customers of their workflow service, without worrying about issues like noisy neighbors or resource allocation.

New Bluetooth 4 1 Comes With New Features

Bluetooth has been around for a while and its still very much relevant. Most people would probably think that Bluetooth technology have remained the same since its inception into phones. However, the reverse is the case.

Bluetooth is constantly worked on and upgraded even more than most wireless sharing technology out there.

Presently, Bluetooth 4.0 is the norm in most new generation smartphones, however, that would change soon as Bluetooth 4.1 is ready to be unveiled.

Bluetooth 4.0 also known as BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) offered good connectivity and faster data transmission solution while reducing power usage compared to earlier version of Bluetooth technology.

        Bluetooth 4.1 will further improved battery usage when in operation but the most important part to note about Bluetooth 4.1 is that according to the Bluetooth Special Interest Groups (SIG), Bluetooth 4.1 will entail the following;

        • Coexistence — engineered to work seamlessly and cooperatively with the latest generation cellular technologies like LTE. Bluetooth and LTE radios can communicate in order to ensure transmissions are coordinated and therefore reduce the possibility of near-band interference. The coordination between the two technologies happens automatically, while the consumer experiences the high quality they expect.
        • Better Connections — provides manufacturers with more control over creating and maintaining Bluetooth connections by making the reconnection time interval flexible and variable. This improves the consumer experience by allowing devices to reconnect automatically when they are in proximity of one another. The consumer can leave the room and upon returning, two recently used devices reconnect without user intervention.
        • Improved Data Transfer — Bluetooth Smart technology provides bulk data transfer. For example, through this new capability, sensors, which gathered data during a run, bike ride or swim, transfer that data more efficiently when the consumer returns home.
Technological improvement is emerging in all areas where its needed and one can only hope that the same advancement in technology would be extended to smartphone batteries in other to make them last even longer.

        My Location in your Palm

Posted by Jerry Morrison, Software Engineer and Ryan Pollock, Product Marketing Manager

Were excited to release an update to Google Maps for mobile for Palm OS. For Palm Centro users, this update includes the My Location feature which allows you to see your location on a map without GPS. If you have a Centro, just press 0 and the map will snap to your current area. Google Maps for mobile will determine your approximate location from the cell phone tower your phone is connected to. Please note that if you have a Sprint Centro, you must first upgrade its operating system to Maintenance Release 1 for My Location to work.

Unfortunately, older Palm models such as the Treos dont have the APIs needed to get the cell tower data, so My Location is not available on these models. All Palm OS phones will be able to enjoy the other features of this release. Google Maps for mobile now supports hybrid view so you can view satellite imagery with street names layered on top. Weve also improved the user interface for finding businesses, addresses, and directions. The route summary now lets you scroll through step-by-step instructions that you can copy to the clipboard. Visit www.google.com/gmm on the desktop or your mobile phone to get the latest release of Google Maps for mobile.

        Google App Engine 1 7 0 Released at Google I O

Each release is special in its own way, but this time we can’t help but be extra proud. From San Francisco to Sydney we’ve taken an extra week to pack in some of our most widely requested features and prepare a host of talks and announcements for Google I/O.

We’ll be bringing you more information about this release and the future of Google App Engine platform, as well as some exciting announcements from our I/O YouTube live stream. We’ll also be posting highlights from I/O on our blog and Google+, so tune in here for updates the rest of this week.

Without further ado, here are the highlights from our 1.7.0 release:

App Engine SSL for Custom Domains
Starting today, developers can serve their applications via HTTPS on custom domains. We’re offering both SNI and VIP based SSL, which provide both a low cost and universally supported option, respectively.

        Server Name Indication (SNI)

        • This allows multiple domains to share the same IP address while still allowing a separate certificate for each domain. SNI is supported by the majority of modern web browsers. SNI is priced at $9/month which includes the serving of 5 certificates.

        Virtual IP (VIP):

        • A dedicated IP address is assigned to you for use with your applications.  VIP is supported by all SSL/TLS compatible web clients and each VIP can serve a single hostname, wildcard or multi domain certificate.  A VIP will cost $99/month.

Google App Engine’s additional location - the EU
For the past four years, App Engine applications have been served from North America. However, we understand that every ms of latency counts so we’ve turned up an App Engine cluster in the European Union so that our developers with customers primarily in Europe can have confidence that their site will look as fast as they’ve designed it.

Initially, the Google App Engine cluster in the European Union will be limited to Premier Accounts only. If you are interested in signing up for a Premier Account to get access to our European cluster, as well as Premium Support and invoice billing, please contact our sales team at appengine_premier_requests@google.com.

PageSpeed - Making the Google App Engine Powered Web Faster
At Google we’ve had an ongoing commitment to making the web faster and for almost a year the PageSpeed Service team has been enabling websites to optimize their static content for delivery to end users at lightning fast speed. Today we’re making this service available to our HRD applications with just a few clicks. Use of the PageSpeed Service is priced at $0.39 per GB of outgoing bandwidth, in addition to standard App Engine outgoing bandwidth price.

        GeoPoint Support in Search
Our Search team deserved a break after releasing the Search API a month and a half ago, but instead they’ve worked hard to announce exciting improvements at Google I/O. You can now store latitude and longitude as a GeoPoint in a GeoField, and search documents by distance from that GeoPoint.

        Other Service Updates
Here are some other amazing updates we have this release:

        • Blob Migration Tool now Generally Available - Since the deprecation announcement for Master/Slave Datastore (M/S), we’ve been continually improving the experience for apps migrating from M/S to HRD. We’re happy to announce that the Blob Migration tool is now generally available, so you can migrate both your Blobstore and Datastore data in one easy step.

        • Application Code Limits Raised from 150MB/version to 1 GB/application - For those of you biting your fingernails every time you update your application, wondering if today will be the day you finally reach the 150MB application version limit, fret not! We’ve updated the application size limit to be 1GB total for all versions of your application. You can check your app’s Admin Console to see the total size of all your application versions. In the future, you’ll be able to purchase more quota to store additional files.

        • Logs API Updates - Paid applications will now be able to specify a logs retention time frame of up to 1 year for their application logs, provided that the logs storage size specified is sufficient for that period. Additionally, we’re introducing some Logs API billing changes so that you can pay to read application logs after the first 100MB. Reading from the Logs API will cost $0.12/gigabyte for additional data over the first 100MB.

        • Go SDK for Windows - We’ve published an experimental SDK for Windows for the Go runtime.

Don’t think these are all the new features we’ve introduced with 1.7.0; we’ve got so much more than just the highlights above. Make your way to our release notes for Java, Python, and Go straightaway to read about 1.7.0. If you have any feedback, we’d love to hear it in our Google Group. We and the whole Stack Overflow community for App Engine have been working hard to answer all your technical questions on the App Engine platform.
